PSA testing vital

Men are once again being urged to take their health seriously.

They are also being reminded by Consultant Urologist, Dr. Jeetu Nebhnani that Prostate cancer is a serious disease in Barbados.

“Get regular check-ups, at least know where you stand,” he stressed during Cancer Support Services (CSS) bi-monthly Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing, which yesterday saw a remarkable 60 men before midday.

“Get the test done and consult with your doctor if you need to have further testing or biopsy done. Like I said a majority of people wouldn’t have to, but a small percentage of people may have to have a biopsy or even treatment for prostate cancer.”

When asked if enough Barbadian men are taking PSA Testing seriously, he admitted it is difficult to say, but indicated that based on our high morality of prostate cancer, maybe not.

“We have the third highest morality of prostate cancer in the world, so maybe some persons are getting their PSA done, it’s abnormal and they are told to either see the Urologist or even have a biopsy, and they don’t take it seriously or don’t have it done until it advances to a later change.”

Dr. Nebhnani also told those present at CSS Belmont Road, St. Michael headquarters that an evaluated PSA does not mean that there is cancer.

“It can be evaluated for a number of reasons, such as recent sexual intercourse, urinary tract infection, prostate infection or recent surgery on the prostate. It doesn’t mean directly that there is prostate cancer, it means further investigation needs to be done,” he explained. (TL)
