OSTEOPOROSIS MAY BE CAUSED BY TYPE II DIABETES

According to the Mayo Clinic, research by two scientists has confirmed that osteoporosis may be caused by Diabetes type II.

The study indicated that “women with a lower bone strength experienced higher levels of hyperglycemia over the previous ten years”. This suggested that there is a correlation between poor glucose control and bone density issues, more specifically, osteoporosis.

According to the researchers, clinical trials were conducted on 60 postmenopausal women, 30 of whom had type two diabetes. Bone strength was then checked when the scientist used a new tool (OsteoProbe) to perform micro indentation of the tibia. They discovered while testing a controlled group of women, aged 50 – 80,  that  when compared to the group of women without diabetes type two, there was an obvious and significant decrease in the strength of bones in those with type 2 diabetes. There was no difference in the makeup or the “architecture” of the bone said the Mayo Clinic spokesperson.

“Senior author Sundeep Khosla, MD, Mayo Clinic endocrinologist, said that this is the first demonstration – using direct measurement of bone strength in the body – of compromised bone material in patients with type 2 diabetes”, said the Mayo Clinic.

Amin said that it is now important to acknowledge that the skeletal anatomy was critical as a target for diabetic complications and should be recognized as such with the proper protocols in place to address the same.

“Conventional measurements underestimated the risk of fracture among patients with type 2 diabetes and loss of bone material strength, or bone quality, is a clear, downstream consequence of the disease”, said Mayo Clinic news. “Co-author Shreyasee Amin, M.D, said that the new technology may help in studying other conditions where fractures occur at higher than expected bone density”.  The study has been published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.  (Source: Mayo Clinic)
