Dominica to upgrade its acute psychiatric unit at St Margaret’s Hospital

The old Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) is to be upgraded through a 1.5 million dollar upgrade with a view to providing excellent healthcare especially to all Dominicans.

Hon. Julius Timothy, Minister for Health and Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau North Constituency where the hospital is currently located, said that the hospital’s redesign and restructuring was “a step in the right direction”. Minister Timothy reiterated the Government’s commitment to improvement access to quality health care to all Dominicans, which previously had to be found overseas.

The once dilapidated APU building will undergo major restructuring into a modern facility with services not previously offered to the people of Dominica.

The Minister said that the new $1.5 million dollar former APU building will house a diagnostic centre. The center will feature mammogram and CT scan machines, an oncology unit, health information unit, conference rooms and situation room.
