Psychiatric Hospital Observes Mental Health Month

“Living With Schizophrenia” is the theme of Mental Health Month, being observed in October in Barbados.

Activities, being hosted by the Psychiatric Hospital in collaboration with the National Mental Health Commission, begin Sunday, October 5, with a church service on the grounds of the hospital at 3:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, October 7, the hospital will host four primary schools for a spelling competition, which will be officially opened at 9:00 a.m. St. Christopher Primary will compete against Eagle Hall Primary, and Reynold Weeks Primary will come up against Grazettes Primary.

On Wednesday, October 8, mental health personnel will visit a number of schools to share information with students, and on Thursday, October 9, it will be the annual sports day for patients and their families on the grounds of the hospital, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The Psychiatric Hospital will open its doors to schools and members of the public on Friday, October 10, for an Open Day and Health Fair. The event begins at 10:00 a.m., and will include tours of the hospital as well as health checks and display booths mounted by organisations such as the Diabetes Association of Barbados and the Barbados Cancer Society.

On Sunday, October 12, there will be a gospel concert for patients of the hospital from 3:30 p.m., and on Sunday, October 26, staff and friends of the hospital will participate in a hike. (BGIS news)
