Ebola fighters are TIME’s “People of the Year”

By Caribbean Medical News Staff
It is a much anticipated issue and this year was very special. TIME Magazine which has annually honoured a Person of the Year title to someone who has made a significant contribution to the global landscape has this year honoured all those fighting Ebola as the People of The Year.
They were the ones who answered the call, says Time Magazine.
Dubbed superheroes and the “Ebola fighters”, TIME Magazine named anyone willing to fight Ebola and risk becoming affected as a hero.
“Anyone willing to treat Ebola victims ran the risk of becoming one,” said Nancy Gibbs, Managing Editor of TIME Magazine.
“But at a time when there seemed no end to the disease, which has killed 7,000 people in West Africa, a group stepped forward despite the dangers. The global health system is nowhere close to strong enough to keep us safe from infectious disease. The rest of the world can sleep at night because a group of men and women are willing to stand and fight….For tireless acts of courage and mercy, for buying the world time to boost its defenses, for risking, for persisting, for sacrificing and saving, the Ebola fighters are TIME’s 2014 Person of the Year,” said Gibbs.
As we speak Sierra Leone officials have said that there is a spike in cases there with as many as 40 cases a day, Liberia has seen a falloff, Nigeria has been declared Ebola free and Guinea continues to fight on. Liberia was ravaged with Ebola for a sustained period and the WHO declared the disease, “an international emergency”.

Medical missionary Dr Kent Brantly, an American Ebola survivor along with doctors from Medicins Sans Frontiers and other health workers from the Charity, nurses and others were also honoured.
The Fergusson protestors took second place for creating a national conversation on race while Vladimir Putin took third place for his invasion of Crimea which saw a spike in his approval ratings no matter which side of the political fence one sits on.
TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year is chosen based on the individual’s influence for good or bad according to sources.
