Jamaica Regulatory Body put in place to govern Ganja Industry

By Caribbean Medical News Staff
A Cannabis Licensing Authority has been put in charge of establishing a legal regulated hemp and medical ganja industry. The directive was given by Minister of Justice Senator Mark Golding who charged the newly formed regulatory body with the responsibility of putting the necessary legal framework in place to regulate the use of medical ganja and hemp.
Senator Golding said “the Cannabis Licensing Authority will, with the approval of the minister responsible for justice, make regulations treating with (among other things) procedures and criteria for applying for and retention of licences, permits and other authorisations for cultivation, processing, distribution, sale and other handling of ganja for medicinal, scientific and therapeutic purposes.”
This is one of the procurements of the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act, 2015, which is required to be tabled in the Senate, which seeks to decriminalize ganja for therapeutic, religious, and private individual utilization.
