New Hospital Promised by Trinidad Government

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said despite cuts in consumption as a consequence of falling energy costs, that Government would forge ahead with developing the much anticipated Point Fortin Hospital. Construction will begin on March 26, 2015 and funding was arranged between the government of Trinidad and the Austrian government. These comments were in response to a question asked by Point Fortin Member of Parliament (MP) Paula Gopee-Scoon during the Prime Minister’s question time in Parliament.

Responding to another question asked by Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley, the Prime Minister said that government can borrow up to $3.8 billion and that the loan was well under the debt ceiling approved by Parliament. Persad-Bissessar said it is the second hospital for the South being built by her Government. She also said in 1958, no hospital had been built in this part of the country, and the last government gave their word for 25 years to build a hospital in Point Fortin.
