Childhood Obesity – From Data to Action

From February 11-13th in Barbados, PAHO and the Ministry of Health held a workshop aimed at building the capacity of a national multi-sectoral team to prepare a draft action plan on childhood obesity and prevention.
Under the framework of the PAHO Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents and on the heels of the launch of the Barbados Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs 2015-2019, the workshop was timely – ultimately resulting in the production of a draft Action Plan using the ‘From Data to Action Toolkit’ to draw on various data sources including the STEPS Survey, the Global School-Based Student Health Survey and other national studies.
Civil society was represented at the workshop through HCC member organisations: The Barbados Diabetes Foundation (BDF) and Best Beginnings and Beyond – a local organisation dedicated to the promotion of breastfeeding. BDF is a member of the action plan Drafting Committee and will work to strengthen civil society collaboration with the local ministries and other key stakeholders in the implementation of the action plan. As an NGO in Official Relations with PAHO, the HCC congratulates PAHO on the on-going recognition of the pivotal role of civil society as a partner in the NCD response.
Globally, regionally and nationally there is an increased focus on childhood obesity as a result of startling data pointing to levels of overweight and obesity upwards of 30% in many populations. CARPHA has recently launched an action plan featured in a prior edition of the HCC News Roundup. (Source HCC news)
