JA: Two Cuban nurses viciously attacked while on duty

By Caribbean Medical News Staff
Two Cuban nurses who are attached to the Buff Bay Community Hospital in Portland were assaulted and seriously injured by a gunman. Reports say that they were attacked and allegedly raped at the nurses’ quarters. Subsequently, both nurses had to receive urgent medical attention and are said to be in stable condition.
Scores of angry Buff Bay residents braved the rainy conditions and took to the streets in protest following the news of the heinous attack on the nurses.
In a firm response to the attack on the Cuban nurses, Minister of Health, Dr Fenton Ferguson strongly condemned the actions of the perpetrator. “This is a disgusting and vicious act undertaken by a coward. To enter the residence of two females and attack them in this manner is cowardly and unforgivable, especially since they have committed themselves to service to the people of that community,” Minister Ferguson said.
“It is time that we start thinking about the implications that these acts can have on our country as a whole and stand up against this type of behaviour. We will do everything we can to bring the person to justice and I urge the residents of Buff Bay and anyone else who may have information to share it with the police immediately. None of us is immune to this kind of action and so we have to support each other and send a strong message to criminals. We cannot allow persons to disrupt services to others and prevent our health workers from carrying out their duties in a safe and comfortable atmosphere,” stressed an impassioned Dr Fergusson.
The matter is currently being investigated by the police and they have reportedly picked up a suspect in connection with the incident.
