Caribbean Cancer Control Leadership Forum

Over fifty diverse stakeholders working in cancer control across the Caribbean came together from May 11-13th, 2015 in Barbados to discuss the importance of developing cancer control plans.
The 3-day forum was hosted by the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov) in partnership with the Healthy Caribbean Coalition, the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), CARPHA (www.carpha.org) and PAHO (www.paho.org).
Opening remarks provided by the Hon. Minster John Boyce of the Barbados Ministry of Health and Sir Trevor Hassell, Chair of the Barbados NCD Commission and President of the HCC, set the tone for 3 days of focussed work on strengthening partnerships for the design, implementation and strengthening of national cancer responses.

Participating country teams from Barbados, Belize, Bahamas and Jamaica and individual country representatives (ICRs) from Dominica, Suriname, Haiti and St. Maarten; emerged from the workshop with action plans which they will take back to their respective countries and use as a catalyst for advancing the national cancer control agenda.
The HCC indicated how pleased it was to see civil society well- represented with cancer societies present on every country team including the ICRs from Dominica, Haiti and St.Maarten.
The NCI will now support the teams over the next 12 months with follow-ups at 3, 6 and 12 months. For more information, please contact the HCC at hcc@healthycaribbean.org. (HCC news)
