China to set up medical mission in Jamaica

Referred to as the Bright Journey Chinese Medical Mission, China has selected a team that will provide free cataract surgical operations and clinical activities to Jamaicans.
As reported by the Ministry of Health, the Chinese team will also be donating medical equipment and supplies to the Ophthalmology Department of the Kingston Public Hospital valued at over US$390,000.
Acting through the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese ophthalmology medical team, which consist of six medical doctors and nurses, will also carry out academic exchanges with Jamaican health care personnel.
The medical team will be based at the Kingston Public Hospital and expects to perform 200 surgeries.
Selection of patients for surgery is being done by members of the Ministry of Health and the Chinese teams using screening criteria for patients previously reviewed in the health system island wide.
Horace Dalley, minister with responsibility for the public sector in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, is expected to bring remarks on behalf of the Minister of Health.
