Members of the public came armed with a plethora of questions when they attended a free Q&A session on diabetes when the Barbados Ministry of Health and the Barbados Diabetes Association a session at Barbados first annual multidisciplinary conference on diabetes which was recently held at the Barbados Hilton on June 13 and 14.

The discussion took place on Sunday 14th June after two days of exciting discussion on the management and care of diabetes from a team perspective which included health care workers from all disciplines.

The discussion examined the team player approach to mental health, eye care, nutrition, exercise, neurology and a range of topics as it relates to the holistic management of the disease.

Featured speakers included Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation, Canadian, Anne Belton; Clinical Coordinator of the Diabetes Centre, Dr. Diane Brathwaite; and Senior Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Kenneth George.

The Ministry opened the floor to those living with diabetes and who wished to know more about the illness. Barbados still has the dubious distinction of being the “amputation capital of the world” and efforts are ongoing by the Ministry of Health to curb diabetes and many NCDs which plague the island’s population.

The event was hosted by the Ministry of Health and the Barbados Diabetes Foundation.
