Family planning boss wants teenage access to contraceptives

The head of the Caribbean Family Planning Affiliation is hoping for an era when adults are open to the idea of allowing their teenagers to be able to access contraception and other services, if the needs arise.

Chief Executive Officer Adler Bynoe said young people should be afforded the opportunity to receive the education and information so they can make the right decisions on their own lifestyles and behaviour.

And those who still choose to engage in risky sexual behaviours, despite the education, should be offered certain services in terms of contraceptives.

“We are still hoping that there can be greater engagement with parents, and we have seen that it is working in some of the territories. St Lucia is an example, our affiliates there have been able to have engagements with parents and Parents-Teachers’ Association and get the membership to understand this is not the case of a provider forcing anything,” Bynoe said.
