Prince surprise for QEH children

BRITAIN’s Prince Harry of Wales paid a surprise midday visit to the Medical Intensive Care (MIC) and the Paediatric Units of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday. It came after changes to his schedule, as a result of Tuesday’s flooding, which caused the postponement of The Reveal Of The 50th Anniversary Monument until last night, and the Independence Parade, now scheduled for today at Kensington Oval. Prince Harry was met on arrival by QEH chief executive officer Dr Dexter James and other senior medical officials. During his hour-long visit, he met with members of staff and patients of the recently opened MIC, and spoke with patients and their families about their health challenges.
The prince also showed keen interest in the welfare of the 24 children housed in the Paediatric Unit and listened attentively to their stories, as recounted by their parents. At the end of the tour, MIC consultant Dr Alok Kumar gave Prince Harry a detailed account of the capacity of the unit and the importance of its role in providing critical care for patients with cardiac failure, kidney and respiratory ailments. Kumar told him that Barbados allowed for a dual or pluralistic type of care, where patients had the option of state-funded or entirely private-funded care. Prince Harry’s official visit for Barbados’ 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations will end tomorrow, when he departs for Guyana.
