ST JOHN’S, Antigua — The Cancer Centre Eastern Caribbean (TCCEC) in Antigua and Barbuda, is back on track after many delays, said Dr Conville Brown, co-founder and director of TCCEC, founder of Partnered Care (1990), and president and CEO of Global Health Partners Ltd (GHP), the private sector principal.
Construction and management contracts were executed this past weekend by Brown and Brian D’Ornellas of OBM Ltd of Antigua. Site clearing for the foundation works at Mount St John’s Medical Centre is slated to begin later this week.
In light of Global Health Partners’ co-principal Prof. Arthur Porter’s recently diagnosed advanced lung cancer and media reports related to concerns in Canada, Porter has suggested the transfer of the chairmanship of TCCEC to Brown. Cottrille George remains vice-chairman.
Additionally, Prof. Karol Sikora, director of medical oncology and board member, has agreed to replace Porter as interim director of radiation oncology and managing director while a permanent replacement is sought pending the outcome and hopefully favourable resolution of Porter’s health and other concerns.
“We wish Dr Porter well. Prof. Don Ragan will remain in charge of the ever-important radiation physics area and quality control for the centre, as he has done for The Cancer Centre Bahamas in Nassau,” Brown said.
Brown added that Porter, like himself, feels that the OECS Cancer Centre is bigger than any one individual or country as it is meant to and will be privileged to serve the people of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the greater Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
