The Government is seeking to have the motion brought by the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, which is challenging the reclassification exercise in the health sector, thrown out on the grounds that it was not filed within the specified time.
Reclassification took effect in April, and nurses and other professionals in the health sector received adjustments in their category and remuneration packages.
Justice Lloyd Hibbert is hearing submissions in the Judicial Review Court, in which the doctors are asking for a declaration that the reclassification exercise in its current state was flawed.
SALARY CONCERNS
In the submissions, it is claimed that doctors who were at Medical Officer Grade 1 were being paid less than many members of the health sector whom they continue to instruct, direct, and supervise.
The doctors are asking the court to compel the minster of finance and the minister of health to implement a reclassification for the doctors to be placed in higher posts.
The doctors say they are being paid two and a half band levels below their current band position.
