Ghana national is head of PAHO/WHO Guyana office

Dr. William Adu-Krow, a Ghanaian national is now the new PAHO/WHO Representative for the Guyana Country Office.  His impressive academic career started in 1975, where he acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology at the University of Science and Technology, School of Medical Science, Kumasi, Ghana.

During the period 1978-1983, Dr Adu-Krow went on to pursue a M.B.Ch.B, Doctor of medicine: Family Practice degree , from the same University and later successfully completed a Masters of Public Health degree, with focus on Maternal and Child Health/Program management, in 1987-1988, from the Columbia University School of Public Health, New York, U.S.A.  Dr. Adu-Krow decided to take one year study leave before continuing on to complete a Doctor of Public Health degree, major Sociomedical Science and Survey Research in 1993, from the Centre for Populations and Family Health, Columbia University School of Public Health, New York, U.S.A. He finally decided to end the long road of formal studies when he completed the certificate programme in Sexual and Reproductive Health with a concentration on human sexuality and AIDS in 1990, through a joint collaboration between the John Hopkins University and the University of the West Indies Distance Education, Cave Hill, Barbados.

Dr. William Adu-Krow has been an employee of PAHO/WHO for over ten (10) years working with the organization since 1994. His areas of expertise are HIV/AIDS, Maternal and Child Health and Sexual and Reproductive Health. His impressive career began in 1983 where he held the position of District Medical Officer of Health at the Ejisu-Juaben-Bosomtwe District, Ministry of Health, Ghana.  In 1988, he functioned as Graduate Research Officer, in the division of Maternal and Child Health, Center for Population and Family Health and the Division of Sociomedical science at the Columbia University School of Public Health in New York.   He went on to become the Medical Officer of Health, Ministry of Health, Barbados, and worked in that capacity from 1989 to 1993.  Dr. Adu-Krow, was also a Research Associate in 1993 to 1994 at the New York Urban League, Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership. In 1994 Dr. Adu-Krow’s career took another leap forward when he joined the PAHO/WHO Organization as a Director for Research and Development, and also functioned as Program Director, HIV Early Intervention Services from 1994 to 2001 and from 1997 to 2001 respectively.

Dr. Adu-Krow worked as a technical officer in PAHO/WHO while simultaneously sharing his knowledge and experiences with students of Columbia University as a pro bono lecturer for Post-grad interns in the Bachelor of medicine programme in the Caribbean.  Dr. Adu-Krow moved on to function as his work experience continued in 2001 to 2007 as a Sub-Regional Advisor for Family and Reproductive Health in 2001 to 2007 and later became the Regional Advisor for Gender, Health and Development, under our present PAHO Director, Dr. Carissa Etienne, the then Assistant Director of PAHO.

Dr. Adu-Krow became the Country Liaison Officer, in the World Health Organization, Western Pacific Region of Manila, Philippines in 2008 to 2010 before becoming WHO Representative in Papua New Guinea during the period 2010 to 2014.

On Monday 17 February, 2014, Dr. William Adu-Krow, presented his Letters of Credence to Ms. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Adu-Krow is a man of great diplomacy and has brought to the PAHO/WHO Guyana country office a wealth of knowledge and experience in public health, which undoubtedly will be used to boost the general functioning of the country office and strengthen international cooperation initiatives with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders in health in Guyana.  Dr. Adu-Krow speaks three (3) languages, Akan, English Language and has a basic knowledge of Spanish. (PR PAHO)
