QEH and BAMP at loggerheads on shortage critical supplies at QEH

By Caribbean Medical News Staff
In an emergency meeting hosted by the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) involving junior doctors who work at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, President of the Association, Dr. Carlos Chase emphasized that only emergency surgeries would take place at the island’s lone public hospital.
Across the way in the Halls of Parliament in the Barbados Parliament, the Opposition Barbados Labour Party walked out of the House after allegations that the Speaker of the House would not hear from the BLP’s leader the Hon. Mia Mottley on the urgent issue of a critical shortage of supplies at the hospital. The Evidence Bill was being debated at the time.
Dr. Carlos Chase and BAMP through its public relations officer, Dr. Linda Williams said that the very basic supplies from sutures, blood tubes to gloves and very “basic, cheap medication” including Lasix (among others), medications for the elderly, pregnant women and babies were also not available because creditors of the hospital had closed accounts for non-payment of bills by QEH.
According to the PRO, the Government needs to be accountable about this shortage of supplies and Dr. Williams asked for “a change in governance” as it relates to the running of the QEH.
A disappointed Dr. Dexter James, CEO of the QEH said that he was extremely disappointed in BAMP who he referred to as a “stakeholder” in their efforts to bring a resolution to a long standing problem. While not stating that he did not think it was a discussion that was to be debated in the press, he accused the BAMP and junior doctors of a “knee-jerk” reaction to an ongoing problem.
However, BAMP remains adamant that the patients who depend on them get quality care while their reputations as doctors are not compromised.
According to the Chase, only emergency surgeries will be performed at the QEH.
