YOUNG TAKES UP MAJOR POST AT DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

British-born Barbadian journalist and communications expert, Kim Young, has taken up the post of Policy & Practice Advisor with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) in Europe. Young took up the post recently and her work will take her throughout the African continent, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Young’s background includes her start in journalism with the Nation Newspaper of Barbados at the tender age of 18. Thereafter she moved to New York working in journalism and corporate communications for a Wall St firm. Upon her return to Barbados she spread her wings to wider communications interventions and then read for her Masters degree in Mass Communication and Globalization at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. She has also worked as promotions and communications officer for Caribbean Export Development Agency and with the Canada High Commission, Bridgetown, as a development officer as well as a consultant.
Her work will involve the interpretation of medical data with a team of epidemiologists and programme managers collected across the world where MSF operates in order to ensure that the information gathered is used to change medical practice and health care delivery for any vulnerable group, those in need irrespective of class, creed, colour or politics and those also in emergency humanitarian situations. She is also responsible for interacting with high-level stakeholders across the world to effect change at the policy level. Much of her work will take her to the field where real life situations occur.
A priority area for Young will include the current migrant crisis. To date over 3 000 people have died at sea and over 300 000 migrant alone have entered at least one country in Europe. Migrants face a number of medical and psychological issues after a traumatic journey. She will attend conferences across the world as MSF looks for solutions for emergency humanitarian crises across the world as well as other global ongoing medical issues in remote areas, disasters and humanitarian crises. MSF played an integral role in managing and assisting in the recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Young is married to Pedro Forte and has one daughter, Alex, who lives in London.
