The National Insurance Board and Reef Construction Company Ltd. yesterday signed a contract valued at nearly $14 million for a community hospital in Exuma. Construction is due to take approximately 60 weeks.

The hospital will be a single-storied building that will offer full health services, including an operating theater, dental suite, laboratory and ambulance service, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham said.

“There will also be two auxiliary buildings house a morgue and mechanical equipment,” Ingraham noted.

He said the hospital is expected to service the healthcare needs of Exuma for well over 20 years. “Just some weeks ago we officially opened a new community hospital in Inagua,” he said.

“Presently, my government is commencing the construction of community hospitals here in Exuma and Abaco. We propose to build hospitals in Eleuthera and Long Island.”

He added that the development of community hospital is a critical part of his government’s strategic plan for the development of the Family Islands.
