In light of reported inquiries made by members of the public regarding certain incidents, the BVI Health Services Authority has given the assurance that patients’ health information is being held in the strictest of confidence.

The Authority, which manages Peebles Hospital and other public healthcare facilities, has declined to give details of the incidents which prompted it to issue a statement yesterday afternoon.

Concerns about the confidentiality of patients’ information were also raised when the Authority launched its health information system, enabling electronic access to medical records from different public health facilities.

The Health Services Authority, in its statement, said: “The Chairman, Board of Directors, Executive Management and entire staff of the BVI Health Services Authority stands by its Patients’ Bill of Rights and Responsibilities document, which in part states that all patients are entitled to all privacy, dignity and respect. The document continues to state that medical information is considered confidential.”

The Authority further stated that it is aware of its duty to protect patients’ information.

“Patient information will not be shared with third parties or media personnel without valid written consent being obtained by the Authority. Additionally, patient information will at no time be subject to questions by third parties or media personnel.”
