ST JOHN’S, Antigua – An ear, nose, and throat specialist, who is in support of government’s proposal to dispense the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine in schools across the island, has acceded that it could be a “very costly venture.”

Dr George Roberts said supplying the vaccine could be a very difficult task for the government.

“The vaccines are expensive and with the health challenges today, it could be a tough task to be able to supply it in the same way the other vaccines are supplied,” Dr Roberts said.

He added, “Hopefully, as time passes, cost associated with vaccines could be decreased.”

The proposed initiative was announced this week by health authorities and is intended to be used as an early screening method that can help prevent a number of cancers linked to HPV.

A number of stakeholders from the public and private sector called for more public education on the initiative before it is implemented.

However, Dr Roberts said early vaccination could help prevent a number of cancers linked to HPV.

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common infection and is passed on through sexual contact.

The HPV vaccine is most effective when given to girls before they engage in sexual activities.
