The Ministry of Health is reporting a spike in the number of reported cases of gastro-enteritis, especially in the Corporate Area.

Up to the end of April 2013, there was a 52 per cent increase in the number of GE cases year on year. The largest jump in cases so far was in the last week of April when there were 965 cases, which was 85 per cent more than the 522 cases for the same week last year.

“Indications are that the majority of cases are caused by rotavirus,” the ministry said in a release yesterday. “Data is revealing that the area most affected is the lower Corporate Area (Kingston 11 & 13). The ministry is concerned over the potential for spread to other areas due to ease of travel.”

Public health nurses have been stepping up health-education sessions and investigations. Health inspectors are also visiting the specified areas for evaluation and to collect specimens where necessary.

Control measures for rotavirus advised by the Ministry of Health

1) Hand washing

2) Boiling drinking water

3) Using clean drinking utensils

Symptoms of gastroenteritis include:

1)Vomiting

2) Loose stools

Persons who suspect that they have gastroenteritis are advised to take lots of fluids and visit the nearest health facility if symptoms persist.
