With the global situation at present, new doctors are being called to be more than doctors. They are being urged to show love and having been the benefactors of free education at Cave Hill, they are also being implored to give back.
Professor Emeritus Henry Fraser called the 2013 graduates from the Faculty of Medical Sciences at University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus to accept all their roles and responsibilities.
He beseeched, “This society has nurtured you, and UWI has provided your free education. The country is your God father and the University your guardian angel, these past five years. Be loyal to them, like family, and not to the mighty dollar.”
Then he asserted, “At this difficult time in the world, when terrorism and war seem indistinguishable, when millions are millionaires while millions starve, remember that as a doctor you are more than a technologist or artisan. You are a professional. You must often be all things to all people. Doctor means you are both a teacher and a leader. You have a moral obligation, to care and to counsel, to cure when you can and to help find solutions, by constantly updating your knowledge.”Having received free education, Professor Emeritus Fraser called on the graduates to rise to the challenges of the society.
He said, “You have an equal obligation to teach and to lead; to lead as the most privileged members of your community, to lead as members of the UWI Medical Alumni to improve the reputation of your university and your degree.”
Imploringly, he pleaded with the graduates to be loving and to forgive, while avoiding materialism.
He stressed, “…At the core must be one love – love and its classmate forgiveness – love for God and love for your neighbour, regardless of colour or creed. What I call the holy trinity of medicine – love, service and integrity, will reward you fully and make your reputation great.”
