Bahamas Addresses Key Issues of Country Preparedness for Ebola

By Caribbean Medical News Staff
Prime Minister Perry Christie last year hosted an extensive press conference to address the general public on the country’s preparedness for the deadly Ebola virus. Much like his compatriots across the region, the issues discussed involved security, immigration, screening and other health procedures that are being implemented by the country.
The Bahamas and the Prime Minister were commended for showing strong leadership in following the recommendations of the International Health Regulations (IHR).
Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization Country Office Representative Dr. Gerry Eijkemans also provided more support and clarity on issues as they relate to Ebola (for the media) as the Country prepares itself for the unlikely event that Ebola should turn up on Bahamas shores.

The IHR sub-committee held several meetings over the last few months releasing more recommendations and action plans and the Bahamas’ Task Force on the Ebola Virus analysed the IHR’s additional recommendations to ensure efficient implementation from The Bahamas.
