ST JOHN’S, Antigua – A well-known urologist has indicated that fewer men are being diagnosed with prostate cancer in the late stages.

Dr Dwayne “Baba” Thwaites said his results are based on statistics derived from the annual screenings held at the Lion’s Den.

“Before times we were seeing people who, when you detect the prostate cancer, they are almost towards dying. They have disease spreading to their lungs or to the bones; they are having obstruction from the prostate cancer and bleeding and that sort of thing,” Thwaites said.

Dr Thwaites said out of the 517 people who had the test done last year, there were 64 with abnormalities.

Further examination, he said, showed that 14 were definitely cancerous, but six to seven needed further investigation.

Thwaites said as the screenings are conducted, more cancer is being detected and more so in the younger population.

“We are picking up more cancers as we go along, but in a younger age group where screening plays the most important part and that’s where we are at right now with these numbers.”

The urologist said he is pleased with the fact that men have recognised the importance of the screenings and are receptive to it as there are no specific symptoms to prostate cancer.

The screenings are conducted every August.
