The government spends millions of dollars to provide dialysis for treatment for Bahamians suffering from kidney disease every year,  according to Health Minister Dr Hubert Minnis.

Dr Minnis told Nassau Guardian yesterday that there are currently 138 patients receiving the haemodialysis treatment and 20 people on the continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) treatment.

Dialysis treatment, a process of removing waste and excess water from the blood, is predominantly used to manage kidney disease and costs approximately $50,000 per patient per year.  So that’s a total of more than $7 million in a single year.

However, Dr Minnis said some patients are being treated at private facilities on the government’s tab because Princess Margaret Hospital’s Dialysis Unit is unable to accommodate them.
