Detectives probing a major insurance scam involving doctors and lawyers, say more than $800 million has been swindled from insurance companies through the scheme.

A senior investigator in the case told The Gleaner/Power 106 News that the $800 million was accounted for in 226 false insurance claims so far identified.

According to the senior investigator, detectives are still going through other documents so it is likely that the figures will move up.

However, the investigator would not disclose the number of doctors or lawyers being investigated only saying there are several persons of interest.

However, speaking recently on Justice on Power 106, Head of the Police Traffic Division, Senior Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis said 13 doctors and five lawyers are at the centre of the investigations.

SSP Lewis brought the insurance fraud to light in March.

The Gleaner-Power 106 News understands that a well-known Attorney- at-Law and two prominent doctors are among those involved in the insurance fraud.

The senior investigator says detectives are following several leads as they continue to go through voluminous documents.

The Insurance Association of Jamaica recently lamented that the collusion between some doctors and lawyers to defraud insurance companies is costing billions of dollars and threatening the viability of the sector.
