The High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) will soon be relocated to the Male and Female wards located in the new wing of the facility, according to Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan.
The Pediatric Ward will also be relocated to the middle flat of the New Wing. The space that is currently being utilized by the Pediatric Ward and the HDU will be taken over by the Caribbean Heart Institute.
The HDU was established to care for patients whose conditions were too serious for the regular wards but not critical enough for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)The men and women will each have their individual High Dependency Units.
The current HDU is located next to the Pediatric Ward and houses both males and females. It has a total of 10 beds. Construction is underway on the bottom flat of the new wing to facilitate this transition.
Khan stressed that once the HDU is moved; there will be an increase in the number of beds. He explained that the new facility will have a total of 100 beds.
The northern section facing Lamaha Street will be converted into a 60-bed unit and will house male medical patients while the southern wing, will have 40 beds and the male surgical patients will be hospitalized there.
“In the female ward, we are converting a six-bed HDU for women and one on the ground floor for men. So we would now have an increase of two extra beds, because the current HDU ward only has ten beds which are being shared by both men and women,” Khan said.
According to the CEO, the Male Medical Ward is for patients with medical complications such as diabetes, and malaria, while the surgical ward is for patients who underwent surgeries.
