October is breast cancer awareness month and we have dedicated this week’s pages to inform the public about the disease. According to the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS), breast cancer is a malignant tumour that has developed from cells of the breast. The disease occurs mostly in women, but does occur rarely in men.

Symptoms of breast cancer can manifest in various ways. Here are some things to look out for when checking for breast cancer.

* Constant pain in the chest/breast

* A change in how the breasts look/feel – tenderness, lumps

* A change in breasts’ appearance – swelling, unexplained shrinking, dimpling, scaly skin, unexplained red areas

* Unexplainable milky discharge from nipples
