ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Much preparation and planning went into the hosting of the Antigua & Barbuda Sickle Cell Association (ABSCA) recently held 2013 conference, which by all accounts was a resounding success.

Approximately 100 people were in attendance as a number of local and regional professionals made presentations relating to the theme: Hoping for a brighter future, living longer, managing sickle cell.

ABSCA President Bernice Pigott said the participants included a number of sickle cell clients, their families, representatives from the medical fraternity and members of the general public.

She told OBSERVER media that one of the many timely topics was Newborn Screening and Early Life Care in Persons born with Sickle Cell Disease, presented by Director of the Sickle Cell Unit at UWI Mona, Dr Jennifer Knight-Madden.

Also sharing information vital to the management of the disease were nutritionist Samantha Moitt and several doctors to include Linda Lovell-Roberts, Dane Abbott, Philmore Benjamin, Edda Hadeed, Leyland Powell and students of the University of Health Sciences Antigua, Shari Jackson and students of the American University of Antigua, and USA-based Regina Clark, an affiliate member of ABSCA.

Persons interested in donating to ABSCA or becoming members are asked to call 775 2748 or email antbar.sca@gmail.com.
