Beloved Trinidadian footballer Akeem Adams has passed away after suffering a stroke in Hungary.

According to distraught relatives, the 22 year-old footballer died after a brain haemorrhage on Monday according to his football club Ferencvaros.

Adams played as a Defender for the Hungarian club since August 2013 and played up until September 22nd against his club’s major rivals but had been hospitalized since he suffered a heart attack and amputation of his left leg.

According to reports, the amputation was meant to alleviate circulatory problems.

Adams underwent several surgeries at the Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Budapest, including the insertion of a mechanical heart and the amputation of his left leg from below the knee in late September. According to reports, his health had improved since November and doctors expected that he would be able to go home for Christmas. An anticipated heart transplant never materialized, however, and doctors were initially concerned over the slow recovery of his amputated leg.

On Boxing Day, Adams was in good spirits and able to speak to friends and family in Trinidad. He indicated that the heart transplant was likely to happen in February 2014.

Adams played several times for Trinidad’s national team and started three matches for the Caribbean country at the Under-20 World Cup played in Egypt in 2009.

Caribbean Medical News extends condolences to his friends and family.
