The Healthy Coalition Council President Sir Trevor Hassell, Maisha Hutton, HCC Manager and long-standing member of HCC, Professor Grell, recently paid a courtesy call on His Excellency The Honourable Charles Angelo Savarin, President of Dominica, during a visit to Dominica last month according to HCC news.
Sir Trevor and His Excellency discussed the role of the HCC in the region and more specifically how the HCC and the Government of Australia are enabling the Dominica Cancer Society, to enhance Dominica’s efforts in preventing cervical cancer.
Sir Trevor underscored HCC’s central efforts in empowering Caribbean people to more effectively respond to the chronic disease epidemic which presents a major health and economic burden to the Caribbean Region and accounts for the death of more than 70% of our people.
His Excellency highlighted that the Dominican government has prioritized the health and wellness of its nation as evidenced by a number of public health measures, most notably the provision of 1/2 day per week during work hours for all civil servants to engage in physical activity.
The HCC was impressed by this progressive demonstration of commitment to healthy workplaces and noted that this was a regional best practice which should be replicated across the Caribbean. The HCC looks forward to continued significant leadership by the Commonwealth of Dominica as we seek to respond to the epidemic of chronic diseases. (HCC News)
