WHO calls an emergency meeting on Ebola outbreak

Just as chikungunya is spreading throughout the Caribbean, the deadly and spiraling outbreak of Ebola is spreading throughout Africa with Liberia reporting illness alongside Sierra Leone. To this end, health officials from 11 countries will meet in Accra, Ghana to discuss strategy for containing deadly outbreaks across the African Continent.
According to reports the World Health Organization is calling this convention so that Ministers can “get a grip” on the current situation and come up with strategic efforts to stem the tide of this deadly disease. To date 763 have been infected with 468 deaths reported.
Ministers will come from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Senegal, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Ghana, the Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast and Gambia. Reports suggest that this is the worst and deadliest outbreak ever experienced.
The WHO says that drastic action is required to stop the spread of the deadly illness across Africa and possible beyond the continent.
Hiding dead bodies
“We’re hoping to take decisions about how to enhance collaboration and responses of these countries so we can get a grip and halt this outbreak,” said WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein.
“We need a strong response, especially along the shared border areas where commercial and social activities continue between Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. That’s unlikely to stop,” he continued.
And according to BBC reports, Dr. Newman of Public Health England (PHE) who was working with WHO with Dr Edmund Newman, worked in the “epicenter” of the Ebola outbreak.
“When patients come into the MSF isolation facility, some walk in if they are in the early stage of the disease; others are more seriously ill and need an ambulance”, said Newman.
The biggest problem the medical doctors faced, according to reports, was that some family members would not disclose the illness of their relatives and were unable to get the isolation centre. In some drastic situations, the bodies of sick or dead relatives were actually hidden by family.
