Antigua Health Minister Promises Quicker Hospital (ER)

By Caribbean Medical News Staff
The Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC) board of directors made a decision to increase the number of doctors in the emergency room (ER) to accommodate an increased number of patients who need emergency treatment. This comes of the heels of numerous complaints over the years about the slow pace in which the ER functioned.
The announcement was made by Minister of Health Molwyn Joseph who also said “that it has been a very difficult problem for the public. Many people go there and spend several hours before they’re seen. I think there will be, within a matter of seven to 10 days a very dramatic improvement because you’ll no longer ever see one doctor on duty.
There will be three doctors appointed to the ER at any given time and no less than two will always be available to care for the patients. Minister Joseph said that this will be a standard practice; while also adding that population Antigua & Barbuda’s wasn’t big enough to sustain the financial demands of the hospital and that a platform is being put in place to make the healthcare service available to patients outside the country.
