The Barbados Diabetes Foundation will be hosting the “1st Annual Multidisciplinary Diabetes Conference – Barbados” a continuing medical education event, on June 13-14th, 2015 at the Barbados Hilton Hotel. Under the theme “Taking The First Steps Toward Multidisciplinary Care” the conference will feature a host of local, regional and international speakers, all experts in the care of Diabetes from a multidisciplinary perspective.
The Honourable John Boyce, Minister of Health in Barbados will open the event which will cater to doctors, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, nutritionists and all healthcare specialties involved in the management of the diabetic. In addition to the drug therapy, diabetic foot, renal disease and other topics, the conference will include a look at eye disease including diabetic retinopathy, oral disease and psychological dysfunction- all complications of chronic diabetes.
Optimal diabetes management involves the provision of care not only the General Practitioner, but also from the Podiatrist, Nutritionist, Eye Specialist, Surgeon and other health professionals. This conference will examine the role that each specialist plays in the mitigation of diabetes and complications that may occur when poorly managed.
Canadian and other international speakers
Diabetes education is important for both the health professional and the patient for the successful management and prevention of the condition. Canadian keynote speaker Anne Belton, Nurse Educator and Vice President of the International Diabetes Federation will address the changing perspectives on Diabetes Education on a global level. Other featured speakers include Dr. Dale Maharaj, Vascular Surgeon and Dr. Emile Mohammed, Consultant Nephrologist both from Trinidad along with the UK-based Barbadian, Dr. Charles Pierce and other speakers from the USA and Canada.
The local contingent includes various specialists involved in multidisciplinary care at The Diabetes Centre in Barbados in addition but to Dr. Jerry Emtage, Urologist, Dr. Sherwin Benskin, Opthamologist, Dr. Toni Nicholls, Neuropsychologist, Barbados Diabetes Reversal Study Team and many other featured presenters. The conference will end with a public lecture at the Hilton Hotel on June 14th, 2015, 530PM on the topic of “Multidisciplinary Care – What Does It Mean to You?” The lecture will feature speakers from Barbados and Canada.
