US authorities probe Antiguan woman’s death

Two investigations are reportedly under way in Miami, Florida, into the death of 32-year old Antiguan Nikisha Lewis.

They are being conducted by the Miami Dade Police and Spectrum Aesthetics where, according to NBC Miami, the Immigration Officer had undergone plastic surgery on Monday, hours before she passed away later that night.

The US media house also said the wife and mother of two died two hours after paramedics rushed her from the facility to the Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The Miami Dade Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death could not be determined immediately, after the autopsy and it could take weeks to find out the exact reason Lewis died.

NBC Miami also reported that a family member confirmed that Lewis had undergone a liposuction procedure.

According to NBC 6 Investigators, the procedure was performed by Dr Rami Ghurani.

The channel quoted his lawyer, Julie Ingle, as saying Dr Ghurani was deeply saddened by the loss of his patient and offered his thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

“We are unable to provide any details on the patient’s care and treatment due to privacy laws; however, Dr Ghurani provided the highest level of care as he does with all patients,” the lawyer reportedly said.

An attorney for Spectrum Aesthetics, Kubs Lalchandani, said he could not comment on specifics about what happened due to privacy laws, but he assured that the company is “committed to upholding the highest standards of medical care and patient safety”.

Even as Spectrum conducts its own comprehensive investigation, the medical facility is “cooperating with state officials to determine the cause of the incident”.(The Daily Observer)
