Another Baby Death – Who is to blame?

The original article can be found in: The Guardian

On Monday, September 9th, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital registered yet another baby death. You will not hear Dr. Marco Tulio Mendez speak on the most recent baby death at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital because the child was admitted there after being treated at the Northern Regional Plaza. Marco Tulio Mendez is a principal at the Northern Regional Hospital and had lashed out at the KHMH claiming all manner of wrongs at that institution. Now his very own private practice is facing the gun. The difference is that the baby deaths at the KHMH were attributed to bacterial infection and the death of a baby at the KHMH occurred after doctors performed two surgeries on a baby at the Northern Medical Plaza.

Based on the information that we have received at the Guardian, a 4 week old baby girl was admitted at the Northern Medical Plaza for treatment of Pyloric Stenosis, this is a condition where the muscle between the stomach and the small intestine is enlarged and does not allow for food to make its way into the small intestine. The condition requires surgery. As we understand it, the child was admitted for the surgery at the Northern Medical Plaza on September 5th, but it was unsuccessful, so much so that the baby had to be readmitted because she was diagnosed with a perforated abdomen. That second surgery was also unsuccessful, so much so that the baby could not wake up after being placed under anesthesia. The case became so unmanageable at Northern Medical Plaza that the baby had to be transferred to the KHMH at around 9:30a.m. on the 9th, where, with all the baby had undergone, there was nothing more that could be done and the baby died on Wednesday morning around 10 a.m.

Now, the case is one that is being considered to be put in the hands of the Medical Counsel. There are aspects of the treatment that the baby underwent which do not appear to have followed protocol. Among these concerns is the fact that the surgeries were conducted by a plastic surgeon and not a pediatric surgeon as what should have been. There are questions whether or not after the first surgery, more harm was done to the child than what had originally existed. There are also questions as to why it was that the baby was transferred to the KHMH after she was originally being treated at the Northern Medical Plaza.

Now it is one of the worst things to play politics on a subject as sensitive as this, but it is incumbent for Dr. Marco Tulio Mendez to speak on this latest case. He, as a principal of the Northern Medical Plaza must brave the cameras and explain what went wrong at that institution. It is incumbent on him to do so since he has become some kind of a champion for these causes. He even has an advert playing on radio seeking to ascribe blame on the death of babies. The people want to know who he will blame for this latest death.
