Gynaecologist back on the job at QEH

Local dominoes champ and Senior gynaecologist Dr Wayne Welch is back on the job at Barbados’ lone hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Tuesday, High Court Justice Margaret Reifer ruled in favour of an injunction filed by Welch against the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and ordered that Dr. Welch be immediately allowed to resume his practice. He was represented by Ralph Thorne, QC.

Dr. Welch of Mount Wilson, St Thomas is now suing for damages as a result of his suspension from carrying out his duties at the hospital. He was criminally charged with assaulting three women over a year ago. He was granted bail in the amount of BDD$15 000 and ordered to surrender his travel documents and report to the nearest police station once weekly.

Thorne submitted that Welch’s patients were placed under “considerable risk” due to his suspension and further that such a suspension defied the laws of natural justice and prevented Welch from attending his patients.

However, Justice Reifer revoked the suspension and said that when one considered the balance of justice, Welch’s injunction against the QEH must be granted. Welch, however, has been warned to have no interaction with the alleged victims.

The hospital was represented by Ivan Walters who suggested that the integrity of the hospital was at risk.
